Let’s Talk About Eating Well and Staying Hydrated

Today is the start of Nutrition and Hydration Week. It’s a great time to stop and think about how we fuel our bodies.

We all know that eating well and drinking plenty of water is important, but what does that actually mean in real life? Let’s break it down.

What Does Eating Well Really Mean?

Eating well isn’t about strict diets or cutting out all your favourite foods. It’s about balance and making choices that help you feel your best. Here’s what that can look like:

  • Eat a bit of everything – Your body loves variety! Think colourful fruits and veggies, whole grains, healthy fats, and proteins like beans, fish, or lean meat.
  • Cut back on ultra-processed foods – Things like crisps, sweets, and fizzy drinks are fine in small amounts, but they shouldn’t be the main part of your diet.
  • Listen to your body – Eat when you’re hungry, stop when you’re full, and don’t be too hard on yourself if you fancy a treat now and then!

Why Is Drinking Water So Important?

Water is amazing. It keeps your body working correctly, helps you concentrate, and even gives your skin a healthy glow! Here are a few reasons to keep sipping:

  • It keeps you cool – Your body sweats to cool you down, and water helps replace what you lose.
  • It helps with digestion – Drinking enough water helps your body break down food and absorb nutrients.
  • It keeps your energy up – If you’re feeling sluggish, a glass of water might be just what you need.
  • It’s great for your kidneys – Water helps flush out toxins and keeps your kidneys happy.

How much should you drink? A good rule of thumb is 6-8 glasses a day – more if you’re exercising or it’s hot outside. And yes, tea and coffee count, but water is best!

Small Changes, Big Difference

If you’re looking for easy ways to improve your nutrition and hydration, try these:

  • Add an extra portion of veggies to your meals.
  • Swap sugary drinks for water (or try adding a slice of lemon or another fruit for a bit of flavour!).
  • Keep a water bottle with you so you remember to drink throughout the day.
  • Plan ahead! Prepping healthy meals or snacks can stop you from reaching for less healthy options when you’re hungry.
