Carers Week 9th – 15th June 2025: You Care for Them — We’re Here for You

If you help someone who is older, disabled, or has a long-term condition, you are a carer. You might not see yourself that way, but your support makes a huge difference.

Carers Week is a time to say thank you. It’s also a chance to help carers find the support they need.

Are You a Carer Without Realising?

Many people care for a loved one without thinking of themselves as carers. If you help with things like washing, dressing, meals, shopping or medication, you are doing an important job.

Caring can be a kind and loving thing to do. But it can also be hard. You don’t have to do it alone.

Support from Your GP Practice

If you’re a carer, let your GP practice know. They can:

  • Add a note to your record so they understand your situation
  • Offer you regular health checks
  • Make sure you’re offered flu and COVID-19 vaccines
  • Point you to helpful support

Need Extra Help? Speak to Our Social Prescribing Link Workers

Caring for someone can feel lonely or stressful. Our Social Prescribing Link Workers are here to help. They work across all GP practices in Gosforth and Jesmond.

The Gosforth and Jesmond Health (GJH) Social Prescribing team work with patients at all 6 GP practices in the area.

They can:

  • Listen to what’s going on
  • Connect you with local carer support groups
  • Help with housing, money or benefit advice
  • Suggest groups and activities for your own wellbeing
  • Find help for the person you care for

To talk to a link worker, ask a member of your practice team.

Do You Know About Carer’s Assessments?

As a carer, you have the right to ask for a Carer’s Assessment. This is offered by Newcastle City Council. It looks at how caring affects your life and what help you might need.

You do not need to live with the person you care for. You don’t have to be caring full-time. This is about your needs.

You can ask for:

  • Help with your own health and wellbeing
  • Support to make caring easier
  • Advice on benefits and local services
