🎓 Got your A-level results today? Don’t forget your free MenB vaccine

Good luck to everyone getting their A-level results today.

If you’re heading to university this autumn, you’ll have lots to think about. You may be looking at accommodation, sorting out your finances or buying things for your new room.

Before you start packing, add one more thing to your list:

Book your free MenB vaccine if you’re eligible.

💉 Why should I get the MenB vaccine?

University is a great chance to meet new people and make new friends. Many students also live in shared halls or houses.

These are places where infections can spread more easily through close contact, like coughing, sneezing and kissing.

MenB disease is rare, but it is very serious. It can cause meningitis or blood poisoning (septicaemia). People can become very ill in just a few hours.

Earlier this year, there was a serious MenB outbreak among university students in Kent. This new NHS vaccination programme was introduced to help protect more young people before they start university.

ℹ️ Who can get it?

You may be able to get the vaccine for free if you are:

• Leaving Year 13 this summer (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008), or
• Under 25 and starting university for the first time this autumn.

You’ll need two doses. They must be given at least 28 days apart. The sooner you book, the more chance you have of getting both doses before university starts.

🙋 Didn’t I already have a meningitis vaccine?

Maybe. Many young people had the MenACWY vaccine at school or before university.

That vaccine is still important. But it does not protect against MenB. This programme offers extra protection against a different type of meningococcal bacteria.

🤔 How do I get my vaccine?

You can book your MenB vaccine through a participating pharmacy if you’re eligible.

Some people will also receive an invitation through the NHS App, a text message or a letter.

Remember, you need two doses 28 days apart. With most University terms starting in mid- to late-September, you still have time.
